Name: Emily
Age: Mid-thirties
Location: Australian Eastern Standard Time
About Me: I'm a 35-year-old lesbian who lives in Sydney with my lovely wife. I'm very fond of history (especially of girls, women, LGBT+ communities, people of colour, migrant communities, children and families). I also love all kinds of scary movies, coming of age narratives, embroidery, karaoke and museums.
About My Journal: I've only just started my journal, but I'd like to use it as a place to enthuse about the things I love (like books, movies, television and nostalgic things), as well as to reflect on the writing and research process.
What I Write: The young adult novel I'm working on is an ensemble comedy-drama set in the early 2000s. In the future, I'd love to write the three H's: humour, horror and historical fiction.
What I Don't Write: I don't write straightforward romance (although I do incorporate romantic narratives into my stories) or high fantasy.
What I Read: In terms of work for adults, I love Grady Hendrix, Daniel Kraus, Jude Ellison S. Doyle, Sarah Waters, Carmen Maria Machado, Greg Jenner, Sarah Miller and Emily Carroll. My favourite kids'/YA authors are Robin Klein and Jacqueline Wilson (primarily her older stuff). Throughout my life, Klein and Wilson have been instrumental in shaping my authorial voice.
What I Don't Read: I feel a bit alienated by stories where the characters are all self-actualised and therapised up to their eyeballs, and where marginalised identities have no bearing on the plot. To each their own, I personally just find it interesting and cathartic when characters' identities shape how they interact with the world, at least to some extent.
Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Certainly! I'm a pretty good editor. I would be most interested in exchanging crit with another writer.
