About me: I've been online since I was a young weirdo, and now I have become an elder weirdo. I'm one of the folks who got my start over on Livejournal, actually, and then had to emigrate when it went to shit. I've had a Dreamwidth ever since. Even though I'll float around to other sites for a while, this is the stable foundation of my internet presence and I will try (keyword: try) to copy the posts and things that matter most to me over here for posterity.

I'm in Fandom, capital F, because even when I'm not in a particular fandom, I am still hanging out with people who are, participating in the culture and community and all that. At the moment, I am between fandoms, unless you count friends' original characters and settings (the ultimate small fandoms!). Although truthfully I almost never completely fall out of them. Perennial favorites include Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Devil May Cry, Farscape, Star Trek, Star Wars (I mostly lurk the original series although some of the recent series have given me the tingle), Coldfire Trilogy, Trigun, Hannibal, Transformers... An incomplete list.

I get into book fandoms a lot. I am also a huge fan of some things I'm not in fandom about, such as Lord of the Rings, Quantum Leap, Babylon 5, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer and a wide variety of other TV shows and anime and yet more books and comics.

And gardening, and birds. Especially parrots. I have a box of bulbs that just arrived that needs planting this weekend. Also libraries, and social media. I believe in preserving culture for the future, but also that people deserve control of their own information. I believe in a decentralized internet and I actively support small and startup platforms like Dreamwidth, Pillowfort and Neocities, the indieweb and federation.

About My Journal:  Fandom, personal life, gardening, birds, whatever is on my mind. Somehow recently not my writing. I have been writing! I have a whole bunch of short stories I could and should AND WILL copy over here. Any minute now.

I do vanish for fairly long periods sometimes, when I get distracted by shinies elsewhere. But I come back eventually.

What I Write: Historically, a lot of fanfiction. Lately I've been working more on my own original stories, though. Usually queer/genderqueer. I like fantasy, scifi and horror--that speculative fiction goodness. I write sex (often weird), and violence, sometimes together, and I like getting deep into my characters' heads and exploring their inner worlds and the dark corners of them and their worlds. The monsters scratching at the door of the mental basement. Also sometimes monsters outside the characters' heads. And then sometimes I write fluffy cute stuff. Mostly short, though. God I want to finish a novel but I can't seem to get past about 12k words.

What I Don't Write: Novels, apparently. Coffee shop AUs. Normal life or anything that makes me dwell too much on the actual world we have, because I live here full time as it is.

What I Read: A lot of the same things I write. And novels. I have a stack of nonfiction I keep meaning to break into and getting distracted from but conceptually I do enjoy a good book about interesting facets of history, how birds think, the secrets of soil, black holes, that kind of thing.

What I Don't Read: A lot of the same things I don't write. And my TBR pile I GUESS.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Sometimes! I am, not to toot my own horn, a pretty kickass beta reader, but in recent times I haven't had the spoons for it very much. Hopefully I'll get them back because I find it a wonderful opportunity for friendship and mutual growth.

Hey! I'm Adrian, 26, and I live in the UK. I'm a semi-pro SFFH writer; i.e. I've sold a couple of short stories to a few small magazines and am very much a wee ickle baby, ha.

I also am fannish, with an emphasis on the -ish; I write a lot of fanfic, but wouldn't really describe myself as "involved" in fandom outside of reblogging pretty art.

About My Journal: As you can see by my public posts, I talk about music/writing/videogames/books. Writing is basically 70% of my life :'D (and I work full time).
My access-only posts do involve some discussion of writing, but are mainly just introspective journal entries for my own sake. I generally work on an access-for-access basis, but I'm also 100% down to subscribe to someone without giving or getting access in return.

What I Write: Queer sci-fi and horror! I'm currently floating about a novel idea about eldritch space sci-fi horror--with lesbians. Fanfic-wise, I ship many things, but I'm mainly interested in writing stuff that's plot-heavy.

What I Read: Basically anything! Big bias towards SFFH, for obvious reasons, as well as LGBT+ fiction--but I'm also down to read YA, poetry, literary fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction... I've never read a screenplay before? But that doesn't mean I wouldn't, just that I haven't. I'm not a smut writer but I have huge admiration for smut writers. I like F/M, F/F, and M/M pairings equally. I'm totally fine with kink and dead dove/idk what the kids are calling it these days; I just ask that the latter be tagged/under a cut so I can avoid it if required.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Yes! I studied English and creative writing at uni, so am fairly versed in critiquing. I do, however, operate generally on a crit-for-crit basis and also probably wouldn't crit something I don't have good understanding of (e.g. poetry, not because I think it's bad, but because I'm nowhere near a poet).

To be entirely honest, I'm just looking for other writers to hang out with! Even if you write something in a genre I don't or write fic in a fandom I'm not in, that doesn't matter; I just miss being around other writers.

Feel free to comment here or subscribe if you think we'd be a good fit. :-)

About Me: I live in Illinois with my lifepartner, in a large Victorian farmhouse with a yard frequented by wildlife. There is a lively magical community in the area, including a coven and various solitaries, and I’m active in community networking. I enjoy suspension-of-disbelief bungee-jumping and spelunking in other people’s reality tunnels.

About My Journal: I post almost every day, often several times a day.  If you're looking for an active blog, this is a good bet; if you're easily overwhelmed, not so much.  I post a lot about writing, some nature and current events, especially science news.  I share my gardening and birdfeeding experiences, with photos in the warmer months.  I'm an active supporter of crowdfunding and often link to other people's projects.

What I Write: I write primarily original work, and some fanfic for fun.  I post a lot of poetry, some fiction and nonfiction.  My most popular fanfic series is Love Is For Children (The Avengers).  See my Serial Poetry page and How To articles.  The first Tuesday of each month, I host a Poetry Fishbowl in blog; people give me prompts and I write poems based on whatever I get.  Next up will be February 1 with a theme of "flipping expectations."  I also participate in the [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam mid-month.  Next up will be February 19-20 on "hopefulness."

What I Read: Anything with words on it.  I am particularly fond of sociological speculative fiction and xenolinguistics.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Yes.  In addition to being a professional writer, I am also a professional editor.  I rarely do editing for free.

About my journal: some personal stuff, music, book reviews, venting about writing

What I write: SF/F. The plot varies but it usually has an element of the Fantastic or Weird about it. I love applying plots from other genres to SF/F and playing around with tropes (eg. drama/slice-of-life/mystery/thriller/horror). As I get older I find myself preferring the struggles of older protagonists and broader casts of characters. For fanfiction, I tend to either write 'fix-it' stuff for works I don't even like that much, or romance and erotica.

What I don't write: Straight romance. Drama in a 'mundane' setting. Anything relentlessly bleak and grimdark. For fanfic, I won't write stuff along the lines of ABO and mpreg, anything underage or incest, gore, fetish stuff.

What I read: Big fan of stuff in the vein of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, so Rivers of London is my jam. Spec-fic with an unusual bent - Gormenghast, China Mieville, Mortal Engines, there was this whole series about sky pirates I loved as a kid which I can't remember the name of... Will always love Ursula LeGuin for giving me A Wizard of Earthsea as a child. Shades of horror (Dracula.) I like Lovecraft in theory for the ideas he spawned, in practice... no. Mystery with an historical feel (ACD Holmes, Christie, Sayers, Chesterton...) I also really love comedy along the lines of P.G. Wodehouse and Cold Comfort Farm. Right now I'm big into nonfiction (science stuff, medical). Interested in reading more magical realism, and more LGBT romance with a happy ending.

What I don't read: not as much SF/F these days, ironically. I became a picky reader at the age of 10 after I burned out on fantasy. Am very "over" The Hero's Journey, though I can appreciate its usefulness as a learning tool and have used it myself. See also: my 'don't write' list.

Could I edit someone else's work: Possibly. I'm open to beta reading.

Introduction

Hey there! I’m a fantasy author and illustrator. Whether you’re here for advice posts, stories, illustrations, or all three, I’m happy to have you around!

Female. Not straight. Over 18. She/her pronouns, please. My favourite stories are Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe, and The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.

What I Post

If you like magical lesbian cat-elves, you've come to the right place! I tend to write Dark, High Fantasy with female protagonists, many of whom are LGBT+. All of my works, collectively referred to as The Chroma Books, are set in my original fantasy universe The Chromaverse.

In terms of writing advice, my goal is to decode common sayings and examine many more topics ranging from storycraft to characters to worldbuilding with logic. Writing—and writing well—is already difficult. It doesn't have to be mystifying. I can't write for you, but I can explain my understanding of craft basics in a clear, meaningful way.

Posting Schedule

* Tips and Tricks Tuesdays (Writing From The Heart)

* Flash Fiction Fridays (Thirty Three Tales of War)

* Sunday Book Review (Wattpad Only)

What I Do Not Post

Fanfiction or anything meant to be erotic. I pretty much stick to high and/or dark fantasy in both reading and writing.

Am I Available For Editing?

I have toyed with the idea of editing on the side before. Since I have no professional experience yet (but plenty of the casual variety), I've got a special tier on my Patreon for 5000 words at a rate of half a cent per word.

About Me: I'm a person! Not into this current trend of listing all my demographic categories, most of them mean little to me anyway. Trying to work out who I am despite the fact that I should have done that years ago, but face it, does anyone know? Sometimes I think I just exist to make worlds and stories. I'm cool with that. I try to make an effort to be kind even if it's hard.

About My Journal: Life updates and things I made. I like to post and talk about my creations at length and would love to meet others who do the same. Please note the caution on my profile page related to stuff I may rant about (Tumblr messed me up pretty bad, is what I'm saying, and I barely even used the place!). Also note I don't post about politics or current events and would prefer not to follow people who do, it's too anxiety-inducing.

What I Write: You can see a list of my stories and 'verses here. Mostly noncommercial original fantasy works, plenty of worldbuilding. I've done NaNoWriMo every year since 2003. It's like my religion.

What I Don't Write: Smut/kinks (sorry, but I'm asexual!), most fanfiction (I have one on the go and it's a borderline case).

What I Read: Fantasy, sci-fi, fanfiction for things I like.

What I Don't Read: Smut/kinkfic again. Dystopian settings - I find hope more empowering.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: No, I can barely edit my own!

draconic_flare: (Default)
[personal profile] draconic_flare
Name: Rori

Age: 21

Location: U.S.

About Me: I'm one of the many new members currently migrating over from Tumblr. I'm currently trying to establish a regular writing schedule (I hope to be writing daily by graduation), as writing is one of the things that brings me the most joy in the world. I also hope to improve my own writing skills in the process, as I often doubt my writing abilities. I tend to be a bit shy, and it takes me a while to really open up to others. Aside from writing, I love music, reading, and either watching theories or video essays on YouTube or rewatching my favorite shows. I'm looking forward to hopefully making some new friends!

About My Journal: Right now, I currently plan for my journal to act as, well, a journal for both my thoughts on various topics and my writing, both for fanfics and original works. I also plan to have some analytical posts in the future studying various Greek mythological figures, aspects of fandoms I'm in, and potentially things going on in the LGBTQ+ community (I'm a biromantic asexual somewhere on the non-binary spectrum). From time to time, I also plan on doing reviews for books and albums that I've encountered, though I do not plan on making this a main component of the journal.

What I Write: I currently tend to write long-form fanfics and original fiction, though I am trying to write shorter pieces as well. I tend towards speculative fiction, though three of my current projects are somewhat historical. For fanfics, I usually write AUs and enjoy soulmate AUs a lot. For my current fandoms, I only have Katekyo Hitman Reborn! fics up, but I currently have a couple of Harry Potter fics in the works and also plan to write for Miraculous Ladybug soon.

What I Don't Write: I don't ever plan to write erotica, and I also don't really care for horror, thrillers, or gore either. I don't currently write comedy, true crime, or mysteries, though I might potentially try my hand at the latter in the future.

What I Read: I read pretty much what I write (in other words, speculative fiction), though I prefer stories featuring LGBTQ+ and/or POC characters, as I happen to be both. I currently switch between YA and more mature works, as I appreciate both for different reasons. For fanfics, I tend to read either plot-driven or character-driven stories - I'm not the biggest fan of fics that focus on the more "cutesy" or sensual aspects of relationships. The main fandoms I read are Harry Potter, KHR! and Miraculous, though I do read the occasional The Good Place, MCU, and Percy Jackson fanfic as well.

What I Don't Read: Erotica and anything that falls under it, though I might make an exception for fanfics in my fandoms if the characters are particularly well written, or if the plot is intriguing enough. On the other hand, I also don't care for pure fluff most of the time.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: In theory, yes, but at the moment, no. I will say when I believe I am able to, however.

I am super new to DW, looking for more places to post writing-related stuff and talk to people with Tumblr's recent issues. I've been told that I tend to be very terse when talking to people? So if that's how I come across, please know that it's not your fault, that's just how I talk. ^_^

About My Journal:
I have no idea how active it will be. Probably not terribly. But hey, I may as well give it a shot!

What I Write:
Urban fantasy, fantasy, sci-fi, mostly short stories, fanfiction, always mostly gen

What I Don't Write:
Romance, horror, space operas

Postings:
Mostly fic recs, little tiny bits of story, art, headcanons for assorted fandom stuff

About Me: I'm a twentysomething (obviously) writer (obviously) with vague aspirations of maybe publishing something someday somehow? I have a degree in Creative Writing from WKU in Kentucky. They named me Outstanding CW Major of the 2012 class, which baffles me to this day. (That isn't false modesty (she said, making it seem more like she was being falsely modest). I am genuinely surprised that they gave me that award.) I have a lot of interests outside writing and reading, but those have been two of my primary passions for much of my life.

About My Journal: Mostly general life updates, but since I've been writing a lot lately, that includes updates on how my latest writing venture (a lengthy TRON fanfic) is going! There may be snippets here and there, so keep a weather eye out. I am trying to update on the regular, but we'll see how long that lasts. I love to get comments, and I try to give them in return if I feel I have something to add to the conversation.

What I Write: Fanfiction, generally for sci-fi-ish fandoms. This is weird, because when I write original fiction, it tends to follow a fantasy bent. I've written modern fantasy, urbanish fantasy, historicalish fantasy... lots of fantasy. Most of it's been YA-focused as well, because I just think teenagers make for more interesting characters.

What I Don't Write: I seriously cannot imagine writing something without some element of the fantastical. I don't write romance very much because I have little experience in that arena and I just don't find it that interesting. Also since what I write is aimed at teenagers, I feel like they need to have more voices telling them that their story can be complete without a romantic counterpart.

What I Read: YA fantasy, regular YA, fantasy, sci-fi (need more of it in my reading diet), urban fantasy. Authors include: Robin McKinley, Tamora Pierce, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Garth Nix, Seanan McGuire, John Green, Maureen Johnson.

What I Don't Read: Contemporary or so-called "literary" fiction. Romance. Erotica of any kind. Very much fanfic at all, even though I write quite a bit of it. (I am vast; I contain multitudes, etc.) I can't stand love triangles.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Could, yes. Would... is another question entirely. I feel like I've got enough on my plate as it stands, unfortunately.

About Me: What about me? 25 year old queer cyber-witch, re-immersing herself in journaling as a practice and still piecing together my online writing community. I was on LJ as a young adult and I miss the vibe. I have deceptively little chill.

About My Journal: Mostly personal, but also some writing, and some talking about writing and books and TV. My day job in tech support and small electronics repair takes up a lot of my energy, and I got a few irons in the fire.

What I Write: Personal essays, poetry, genre fiction (read: fantasy, I guess!).

What I Want to Write: Romance, creative non-fiction, comics.

What I Read: Essays, poetry (I get like 10 poem-of-the-day emails), literally any fiction story with lesbians, a gaggle of web and print comics, newsletters about the future.

What I Want To Read: Better fiction stories with lesbians, and more nonfiction. I'm always down for good sci-fi and fantasy, and I have a soft spot for YA, as I suspect many folks do.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: I'd love to.

About Me: Unpublished and over-educated (just finished my creative writing masters), unemployed, lesbian, fannish. Love classics, animation, baking.

About My Journal: Largely a personal blog, so frequent ramblings about whatever I'm writing at the moment, fannish stuff, and just whatever's happening in my life.

What I Write: Dabbled a bit in everything, but primarily SF/fantasy, often queer.

What I Don't Write: Poetry, largely.

What I Read: Again, a bit of everything. Currently: slogging my way through A Song of Ice and Fire, reading all of Sarah Waters' novels in chronological order (just finished Fingersmith and seeing her at a book festival later in the month, eee), doing a 2014 reading bingo, and reading every interesting-sounding translation of Euripides' Hippolytus I can get my hands on. On my to-read shelf atm is Gormenghast and a selection of classic SF novels I feel like I ought to read. I have a Goodreads!

What I Don't Read: What doesn't interest me. Not so much into non-fiction, horror, crime and romance but will dabble if it comes recommended.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: If I have time/energy and it's reasonably short.

Name: I don't give out my name, sorry.

Age: 20

Location: Australia

About Me: I'm a uni student. Studying psychology. I want to write a book. I am trying to ease back into writing.

About My Journal: I'm not sure what it's going to be yet. Probably personal musings and writing snippets and excercises. I might also post some book and film reviews.

What I Write: That's hard to say. I just love creating characters, telling an interesting story, and playing with worldbuilding, genres and conventions.

(At the moment, I'm taking it slowly. I've had a creative block for the last year and a bit and am trying to find the fun in writing again. My first novel has been pushed aside, and I'm tentatively beginning a new project with no idea where it'll take me.)

What I Don't Write: I wouldn't completely rule out any genre. But at the moment I don't write: Historical, hard-sci-fi, romance/erotica, chick-lit, poetry, biography, non-fiction.

What I Read: I'm open to reading anything, as long as it's good. At the moment, I tend to be drawn to speculative fic, horror, suspense, lit fic, magical realism, paranormal,  drama/mystery, cyberpunk (and variations), urban fantasy, and dystopian science fiction. (On the lighter side, I also like comedy - eg. Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, P.G. Wodehouse.)

What I Don't Read: The same old story recycled. I got sick of reading high-fantasy with elves, dwarves, and "The Chosen One" a looooong time ago. I also avoid memoirs, biographies, romance, and contemporary drama.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: I don't have official editing skills, and I'm busy. BUT I'd be happy to give casual feedback and constructive criticism. I also wouldn't mind doing a "swap deal".

Name: Gabe

Age: Late 20's

Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA

About Me: Introvert, INTJ, I read and write voraciously, watch a small number of TV shows regularly (and far too much random Youtube crap), play videogames obsessively, gorge on politics until it becomes too depressing and I have to look at kittens, and repost far too much dreck on my Tumblog.

About My Journal: I'm not very active, although I'm trying to change that. (I say this all the time.) I tend to post articles I find interesting, funny or necessary, little bits and blobs that I need to purge from my brain, and bits and pieces of my work that feel finished.

What I Write: My two main projects fall under the broad category of speculative fiction. Universe Lost could be called soft sci-fi, and Ghost Sight is pretty definitely urban fantasy. I have a side-project that's post-apocalyptic, but I'm having trouble making it work. In general I stick to fantasy/sci-fi with horror mixed in.

What I Don't Write: Poetry, because I'm terrible at it. Modern lit, because there aren't any spaceships or wizards. Comedy, because I'm only ever funny by accident. I may or may not write fanfic, but I'll never post it.

What I Read: Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, modern lit, non-fiction on just about any subject.

What I Don't Read: Memoirs and auto/biographies of politicians. The rhetoric is already thick enough, I don't need to go diving into the sludge.

This all sounds incredibly formal because a) these things always make me nervous and b) I've been mainlining BBC's Sherlock and English mannerisms are leaking into my brain.
