Name: Cory

Age: Nearly 40!

Location: USA East Coast

About Me: I'm an enby parent who lives with my son (7) and partner... I deal with bipolar and probably what's high functioning autism, but I feel like I'm in a really good place as far as all that. I'm spiritual (nondual spirituality, I really like Ram Dass) but have zero interest in converting anyone - I just want to transform myself into a kinder, more loving person. I'm trying to get myself to write more, I've written a few novels, most of which only I've read and that's fine - I write for me. But I am interested in finding a way to freely self-publish like maybe an e-book of some stuff just to make some stuff free and easy to read for people I know and anyone else interested, I dunno. I try to be silly as much as possible because life feels way too serious way too often.

About My Journal: It's very newly set up, but I see myself posting most days like I have been so far and like I did aeons ago when livejournal was better and then later when greatestjournal still existed. I just write about life in the few entries so far, but easily see myself also reviewing books I read, talking about just stuff in society, just having fun with it. I may post some writing there but I don't know yet, although if I ever do find somewhere to make work easily, freely, and publicly accessible I'm sure I'd share it for anyone who may be interested.

What I Write: I tend to lean toward horror and weird dark stuff and scifi. I'm not so much into realistic horror (as in "ahh murderer!") but stuff with bizarre, scifi, or supernatural elements. The last novel I wrote was a horror/scifi with aliens, with some Buddhism mixed in.

What I Don't Write: I'm willing to try most things if the idea naturally unfolds and that's what the story tells me it needs to be (I'm a discovery writer)... I don't write erotica. For the most part I stick to the stuff listed above.

What I Read: It depends on what my fixation is at the time - everything from Star Wars/Doctor Who novels, to contemporary horror or scifi novels, to historical or spiritual nonfiction.

What I Don't Read: Romance, Historical Fiction, Fantasy - it's not that I'm not willing to it's just it's either rarely or never been what I've been reading in the past few years. That can change, too.

Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: I don't know how good I am or am not at editing but I'm certainly willing and happy to try, if someone asks for help, to provide what help I can!

Hello!

>> I'm an enby parent <<

I have a lot of QUILTBAG folks in my audience and often write about those topics.

>> I just want to transform myself into a kinder, more loving person. <<

A laudable goal, but one caveat: it's very easy for that path to make someone less fit for survival in a society that is very much the opposite. I believe Buddhism has some good resources on what amounts to bodhisattva work, but it's not always easy to find as it tends to be on the monastic side rather than the public-facing side.

DW has many writing communities. [community profile] crowdfunding and [community profile] allbingo do monthly fests with rotating themes.

>> I've written a few novels, most of which only I've read and that's fine - I write for me.<<

Totally fine.

>> But I am interested in finding a way to freely self-publish like maybe an e-book of some stuff just to make some stuff free and easy to read for people I know and anyone else interested, I dunno. <<

Self-publishing is pretty easy nowadays. You can post things on your blog -- plenty of folks have done novels that way. I run my Poetry Fishbowl on the first Tuesday of each month; you're welcome to check out the one on October 1 with a theme of "Cryptids." Would you believe that fans have more money than poetry editors? Yep, they do.

AO3 is worth exploring, and not limited to fandom, but is noncommercial. There are several platforms that do ebooks free or for sale. Consider crowdfunding, with places like Kickstarter or Patreon. Writers have many more options now than they used to!

>>It's very newly set up, but I see myself posting most days like I have been so far and like I did aeons ago when livejournal was better and then later when greatestjournal still existed. <<

Many people use recurring posts to pin down their favorite topics and maintain activity.

Also, lots of people miss LJ but few make an effort to recreate what made it great. If that's something you choose to do, there is a pretty big audience for that.

>> but easily see myself also reviewing books I read,<<

Check out [community profile] books and [community profile] book_love.

Interesting. Horror isn't my top favorite but I do like dark SF or fantasy. I've got a few truly dark things of my own, but my audience leans lighter and the results are sometimes hilarious. They've prompted me for Gothic fluff and post-apocalyptic hopepunk.

I've had friends who weren't into erotica. [personal profile] dialecticdreamer favors gentle fiction, mostly fantasy, and does one or two prompt calls a month where you can ask for what you want and get it.

You might like kishotenketsu. It lends itself very well to the Asian and spiritual stuff you've mentioned, though obviously not for horror.

This is my goal. Haven't done it yet... but it is my goal! You seem like a cool person, I would like to add you!
